This award enabled me to travel throughout Colombia in South America for 5 weeks. During my trip, I took every opportunity to visit local craftsmen and learn about indigenous art in museums and from the tribes people themselves. I learnt how forms communicate. How lines have predetermined rules of how to travel along a form. Pre Colombian art seems to tell of the spiritual nature of abstract shapes. Since my return to the City and Guilds of London Art school, I have found it helping to inform my creative decisions. One example was with a commission I won to carve a grotesque for St George’s chapel at Windsor. The design that they accepted was directly informed by my experiences in Colombia and other works since have also benefited from the insights I gained from my trip. Thank you ever so much for the opportunity of having a life transforming experience.
