Chelsea Arts Club Trust/Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Studio Award – Fashion Studio
While at Central St. Martins, I specialised in using traditional, hand-craft techniques such as knit, hand pleating, smocking and crochet. My research over my past three collections has focused on ideas of Sunday Best, children’s clothes and interesting fabric manipulation. In all cases, the clothing explores ideas of special occasion, nostalgia and coming of age. The painstaking techniques, seen both in my research and my own work, make the clothing delicate and fragile, but the character I design for conflicts with this; an awkwardness finds it’s way into my silhouettes and fabric combinations, the awkwardness that relates to going to your first disco in a dress that’s a bit too grown up. This conflict is key—like traditional Sunday Best, my clothes aim to be adored and cherished, but the awkward teenager I design for would throw them over jeans and a T-shirt and go and eat pizza.
